Govt. College for
Women, Samanabad, Lahore, is one of the oldest female institutions of the
Punjab. It was founded in 1957 at Gulberg as an Intermediate College and was
shifted to Samanabad in 1969. Later on it was upgraded to graduate level in
1971.
The institution then elevated itself as a post-graduate college due to the fact that in 2008 M.A. English Classes began. The college now offers admissions at Intermediate, Degree and Post Graduate levels. Admissions in computer science are also offered at Intermediate and Degree level. More over different shorts courses and programmers like P.G.D., Spoken English are also being offered.
The institution has thus run a history of over 50 years to come up to the present leading status. Its premises are spread over an area of 12 acres. Under the dynamic leadership of present college administration along with the co-operation of higher authorities, the institution is progressing by leaps and bounds.

There are 102 spacious classrooms furnished with adequate furniture. Labs are properly equipped to cater to the needs of the students. Two blocks for Postgraduate classes have recently been built, each comprising six spacious rooms. A new building for the cafeteria and Fine Arts Department has also been added to the existing structure, whereas a separate cafeteria has been constructed and reserved for the faculty members.
A seminars, whereas a large capacity auditorium is also being constructed to cater the needs of over 6000 students.
There are over 30000 books bases on modern knowledge and research in the library to update the students’ knowledge.
About two hundred qualified and experienced teachers are professionally involved in imparting instruction to the students. It is their earnest endeavor to inculcate confidence, courage, moral values and practical wisdom in their students to enable them to meet the challenges of modern life.
The intellectual milieu of the institution has faith in creating liberal moral ethos by involving the students in multifarious co-curricular activities. The students participate in different sport, debates, declamation contests, recitation competitions and win scores of trophies, titles, prizes in Board / University Intercollegiate competitions.
In the field of academics, our students have always achieved excellence. Students’ performance in the Board / University examinations has been excellent. Many students get merit scholarship and achieve high positions in Board / University examinations. Some of our outstanding alumni are playing key roles in national life and are holding important social positions in different professions. They are the real pride of the institution.
The second shift programme was introduced in the college by the government in 2004; since then it has been functioning successfully. In spite of the fact that students with low merit are inducted in this programme, yet the results produced by them are exceptional. This is the result of joint efforts and teamwork of the in charge and the Staff of this programme.
